Reference Guide: Must Have Hair Products

My four absolute must haves to protect and maintain your hair.

I always am asked about what products are necessary to keep hair as healthy as possible.  In addition to the typical hair products that I recommend while in the salon, there's a handful of items that are great to use to maintain your hair.  Bonus: so many of these are available on Amazon!

1.) Wet Brush

A wet brush will be the most gentle way to brush out your hair without ripping through it.   Combine this with a serum when your hair is dry or 7  Seconds Detangler when your hair is wet for ultra gentle brushing.

2.) Silk/Satin Pillowcase

Your hair rubs against your pillowcase all night causing tangling and breakage (especially for lightened or sensitive hair).  Switching to a silk pillowcase allows the hair to glide over the pillow better, lessening the amount of breakage and tangles.

3.) Dent-Free Hair Ties

Traditional hair ties cause tension on the hair which leads to breakage.  In addition to varying the style you're using (which prevents constant tension on the same part of your hair) switch to one of these hair ties which are more gentle on the hair than traditional options.

4.) Shower Filter

This one is important for my natural blondes or anyone with colored hair, but it's only necessary if your home doesn't have a water softener.  Depending on where you live, shower water can actually have a ton of minerals in it that can deposit into your hair causing it to look dull, dingy, or darker over time.  Shower filters are super easy to install (and later uninstall if you're renting) and work to protect your hair color as well as your skin.
