Refresh & Renew Your Hair and Space For the New Year
I don’t know about you, but I’m currently in need of a T-shirt that reads, “I survived the 2021 Holiday season.”
So, yes. The holidays were long and tough - but they were also lovely in their own way, too. That said, my skin and hair are wearing the signs of exhaustion a bit too clearly - and I figure you might feel the same!
If you’re ready to refresh and renew yourself for the year ahead, I have 7 quick, simple and super-productive tips to help you zhush up yourself and your space.
1. Take an hour to clear out the clutter.
And that includes your hair products, old food, and clothing!
For hair products, check for the date on the back of the bottle or tube. You’ll usually find it pictured as an open tub with a number inside. This indicates how long the product is good for once it has been opened - usually 12 to 24 months.
As for food, this one’s simple. Take a minute to go through your freezer (yep, the part we always forget) and cabinets to purge! You’ll feel so much better later, I promise.
Personally, I love to sit and review my clothing at least once per year. I’ll ask myself questions like: What makes me feel really good? What do I continue to wear, over and over? What have I not reached for in several months or years? Then, I’ll put the articles of clothing that no longer suit my body, lifestyle, or personal style into bags for donation.
2. Put the holiday decor away, and spend a day deep cleaning or treating yourself to a cleaning service!
This one will come down to a personal choice. Sometimes, you might find that deep cleaning ends up being therapeutic. Other times, you might not have the ability to set a couple of hours aside to truly deep clean your space - which is the perfect excuse to invest in a professional cleaning service!
Either way, you and your home deserve to be pampered 💖
3. Set aside an afternoon to tick off every single box on your to-do list.
You know those things you’ve had on your to-do list for a few months now? Set aside the time to get them done, all at once!
Book those dentist and oil change appointments you’ve put off, and get them on the calendar. If you want to feel even more productive, throw a skincare mask and deep conditioner on while you do those things! The time will fly by, and you’ll end up with softer skin, shiny hair, and a zeroed out to-do list.
4. Plan out how you’ll achieve your New Year’s resolutions.
Give yourself a window of time to plan out how you’ll achieve those resolutions you set. What do you need to purchase? What plan should you put in place to make sure you achieve your goals?
If you’re able to, it always helps to create mini goals for yourself. Whether those goals are daily, weekly or monthly, your future self will thank you!
5. Sit down, light a candle and enjoy your (soon to be) clear space and mind.

6. Clean out your hair care cabinet.
Every year, without fail, we all end up with far more products and tools in our beauty cabinets than we started out with. (We can thank the multiple hair color and style changes we opted for throughout the year!)
Take this as your reminder to clear out your old hair products, and make sure you’re not using anything more than a couple of years old. Additionally, you’ll want to:
Deep clean your brushes, by removing any old hair and soaking them in warm soapy water. Scrub if needed, and lay flat to dry!
Clean out your hair dryer filter. This process differs from dryer to dryer, but for most hair dryers, you can unscrew the piece on the back that covers the grate. If you own a Dyson blow dryer, slowly slide off the mesh-looking piece on the bottom.
Replace old hot tools! If your hot tools are a decade old or seem to be slowing down, it’s likely time to replace them. Efficient hot tools will help you achieve the desired effect on your hair, while using less heat. It’s a win-win!
Clean your hot tools. A great way to do this is by carefully running a damp towel over the plates while the iron is hot.
7. Pre-schedule your beauty appointments for the coming months.
As you look ahead at warmer months, spring festivities and summer vacations, you’ll likely have a good idea of when you’ll want your hair (and other beauty treatments) done. Take a moment while you’re sitting on the couch and enjoying your favorite warm drink to pre-schedule those appointments, so you don’t have to worry about them later!
Here’s to a refreshed, rejuvenated and relaxed you in 2022!
