Reference Guide: Must Have Hair Products for Extensions
I always am asked about what products are necessary to keep hair as healthy as possible. In addition to the typical hair products that I recommend while in the salon, there's a handful of items that are great to use to maintain your hair and absolutely essential for those of us with hair extensions. Bonus: so many of these are available on Amazon!
I've compiled a list below of all of my absolute must haves for any client in order to protect your hair. Find all of these must-haves below:
1.) Wet Brush
A wet brush will be the most gentle way to brush out your hair without ripping through it. Combine this with a serum when your hair is dry or 7 Seconds Detangler when your hair is wet for ultra gentle brushing.
2.) Silk/Satin Pillowcase
Your hair rubs against your pillowcase all night causing tangling and breakage. Switching to a silk pillowcase allows the hair to glide over your pillow better; lessening the amount of breakage and tangles. This will protect both your natural hair and your extensions!
3.) Dent-Free Hair Ties
Traditional hair ties cause tension on the hair which leads to breakage. In addition to varying the style your using (which prevents constant tension on the same part of your hair) switch to one of these hairties which are more gentle on the hair than traditional options.
4.) Microfiber Towel
All of those extensions can really absorb and hold a lot of moisture. Wrap your hair in this towel for 10-15 minutes after a shower, but prior to blowdrying to soak up extra water and save you time on styling!
5.) Shower Cap
We all know that it takes extra time to style your extensions on wash day, but, the benefit to them is that they hold style so well. These are my favorite reusable shower caps that will allow you to keep your hair perfectly dry and preserve that style between wash days.
6.) Clips
It is very important to get the bonded portion of your extensions dry after showers in order to protect your natural hair. You'll want to be sure to blowdry section by section to target these areas. Using sturdy clips such as these will allow you to keep the rest of your hair out of the way as you blowdry.
7.) Shower Filter
This one is only necessary if your home doesn't have a water softener. Depending on where you live, shower water can actually have a ton of minerals in it that can deposit into your extensions changing the color and quality over time. Shower filters are super easy to install (and later uninstall if you're renting) and protect your extensions, natural hair and skin!
Please Note: I will ONLY ever recommend products that I've tried myself and love.
