Easy Holiday Hairstyles to Try This Season

I don’t know about you, but the moment temperatures start to drop, I’m immediately dreaming up different ways to accessorize and style my hair.

There’s something about the colder weather and cozier season that makes us all want to bundle up and add in some jewelry, hair accessories, rhinestones (maybe, maybe not), braids and texture. If you’re like me and are wanting to experiment with something new for your hair this holiday season, I’m here to share a few *easy* holiday hairstyles that will pack a punch.

At the very least, you’ll find a way to ensure your family comments more on your hair, and less on… everything else. Feeling convinced to read the rest, yet? If so, let’s get started 😏🎄

Things to Consider

Choosing how to style your hair during the holiday season is serious business! Here are three factors to take into consideration when planning your holiday hairstyles:

  1. What are you planning on wearing? Is there a specific shoulder line or scarf you’d like to show off, or are you wearing a piece of jewelry that you’d like to bring attention to?

  2. Will there be photos? If so, do you prefer your hair up, down, straight or curled in photographs?

  3. A slight updo always feels special during the holiday season. If you’re wanting to dress things up just a smidge more, consider adding in some fun accessories like scrunchies, ribbons, statement clips or pins! I’ve linked a few of my favorite hair accessories from Amazon at the bottom of the blog. Make sure to sneak a peek!

Alright, now that we’ve got the important details sorted out, let’s talk through some go-to holiday hairstyles!

Go-to Holiday Hairstyles

Braided

There’s nothing quite as beautiful as a large, loose braid. Not only is it easy to create, but it’s also incredibly versatile - wear your braid to the side, down your back, or as the top half of a half up, half down style.

If you want to add a more soft and whimsical feel to your braid, curl your hair beforehand! Then, once you’ve braided your hair, pull a few pieces out around your face to soften the look.

And if you’re wanting to dress your hairstyle up even more, don’t be afraid to add some sparkle or a ribbon! Try tying a cute little ribbon at the bottom of your braid, or adding a simple statement clip or pin in your hair for some subtle detail and contrast.

Half Pinned

As always, I like to start this hairstyle out by creating soft curls throughout the hair. Then, I’ll bring a medium-sized section from the front on each side, and have them meet at the middle back of my head. I’ll secure those two pieces with elastic, and then twist and tuck the elasticated section within itself to add a bit of texture, while also hiding the elastic band. From there, I’ll add more pieces into that twisted section, and pin them for added security.

Another pretty take on the half-pinned style? Try a fishtail braid. Once you’ve sectioned off your hair and fishtail braided it, make sure to gently pull on the individual strands of your braid to add a bit of fluff and fullness, and then secure it all with a scrunchie or elastic with ribbon detailing.

Done Up

The updo is arguably the most popular holiday hairstyle - and there’s so many ways to do it!

My biggest trick when trying to achieve a modern, sophisticated, yet soft and whimsical updo is to start with a small bun (secured with an elastic), in the place where I want the majority of my updo to sit. Then, I’ll begin securing other pieces of hair back with pins onto the bun, until I achieve my desired look!

In the case of the romantic updo, the less perfect, the better.

I can’t wait to see everyone’s holiday hairstyles! If you do anything fun with your hair this season, I’d love to see it - feel free to share your photos with me over on Instagram (@michaeladoesmyhair) ✨ I promise to “oooh” and “ahhhh” only a little bit 😉
