Hair Extension FAQ's

All of my most asked hair extension questions answered in one place.

More and more women have chosen to make the switch to extensions. Whether it’s their post-quarantine need for a total makeover, or the fact that they’re *actually* far less upkeep than you’d expect, people of all hair types are loving the look of a fuller and longer mane.

Along the way, I’ve received numerous questions about extensions, and I’ve answered them below!

What can I use extensions for?

When I say anything, I truly mean anything. Many will confuse extensions for serving to create length only, when in fact, extensions can be utilized for length, thickness, or to enhance color with minimal to no color change to the natural hair.

Think of it this way - when you add in extensions, you have the opportunity to add a different shade of hair for dimension, depth, lowlights or potentially even an ombre effect. Extensions just increase your hair’s ability to change, with minimal heat and color damage. They’re the best of every world, really.

What types of extensions are there?

If you’ve watched Mean Girls, you’ll get this reference - the limit does not exist.

In all seriousness, I currently offer hand-tied + sewn in weft, micro beaded and tape-in extensions. Depending on the health of your hair and your lifestyle, we can work together to decide what kind of extensions would be best for your needs.

How long do extensions last?

The hair you purchase will actually last for up to a year, or potentially even longer! Depending on how you care for the hair, your hair can last anywhere within that time frame.

Being that your natural hair will grow, you’ll need to visit the salon to have your extensions moved up every 6-8 weeks, depending on the installation method we choose to use.

What is the cost?

As with all things beauty and hair, the cost for extensions varies depending on the method chosen, and the amount of hair that is needed to achieve your desired look. For example, if you’re wanting just to add a bit of volume to your current style, that’s a drastically different cost than a rapunzel-esque transformation.

As a general rule of thumb, first installation appointments can start as low as $400 (for adding thickness to medium length hair), or increase to $2,200 for a full “mermaid effect.”

From there, maintenance and move up appointments range from $200-500, depending on the amount of hair you utilize.

How would I maintain the hair?

Gentleness is key! Keeping in mind that the extension’s hair is attached to your real hair, you want to make sure you handle your extensions with delicacy. For a few quick recommendations:

  • Brush from the bottom of your hair, first, and hold your hair where it is attached near your root while brushing. This will help to anchor your hair, without ending up with that unintentional hairbrush yank. You know the one.

  • Sleep with your hair loosely braided (on a silk or satin pillowcase, if possible), to reduce tangling and pulling.

  • Be sure to use only high-quality products to maintain the integrity of the hair. I’ll always send you off with product recommendations for your new extensions!

How do I go about getting extensions?

Being that I color match before ordering extensions, we would first want to complete your hair color appointment. After your hair has been colored, we can sit down together to match your hair to the appropriate extension type and color, and place your hair order.

The extensions typically take 1 week to arrive, and at that point, you’ll come in for your application and installation appointment. After your initial installation day, maintenance appointments for your hair color and extensions can all be done within the same salon visit!

Would extensions be right for me?

Here’s my favorite thing about extensions - there is an option for nearly everyone, and every hair type! Apart from the obvious (and very popular) mermaid hair options, extensions can be utilized to enhance your color by adding to your highlights, or you could even add a pop of fun color, without the dye commitment.

You can thicken your fine hair, by matching your existing length and adding in a small number of extensions to create fullness. Or, if you’ve experienced prior breakage, we can always add in a few small pieces where they’re needed, in order to cover those thinner spots.

The beauty behind extensions lies in their customizability. If you’re interested in learning more and jumping on the waitlist to book your extension appointment, just click here to view my site, or email me
