7 Tips to Make Your Fine Hair Look More Full

Before I even begin sharing any tips or insight for fine hair, I want to first preface this blog by saying that every hair type is beautiful. Every single one!

There is no “ideal” hair type. Whether your hair is thick, thin, coarse or fine, it’s beautiful, just the way it is. However, as a hairstylist, I often am asked how to make fine hair appear thicker, bouncier and more voluminous.

So, if you have fine hair and find yourself craving a bit more fullness, I’m here to help! Read my 7 tips for fine hair, below.

7 Tips to Add Fullness to Fine Hair

1. Blowouts

A good blowout can make a world of a difference in ensuring your hair remains as bouncy and full as possible!

When blow drying your hair, make sure to focus on your roots, where you’ll achieve the most noticeable volume. As you finish blow drying your hair, make sure your roots are 100% dry. If they’re left even slightly damp, they’ll fall limp!

Now, to achieve volume at the root of your hair, you’ll want to move your hair in the opposite direction from how it lays naturally. By doing so, you’ll be able to lift your roots up and seal in that natural volume with the heat of your blow dryer. This is why you’ll see many people blow drying their hair with their head upside down. It might feel like a feat best left for gymnasts, but it works!

2. Prep

I know I’m a hairstylist and I’m supposed to say this, but please know that I mean it nonetheless: proper products make the difference between flat and full hair.

I love using Unite’s Liquid Volume at the root to add fullness and lift to fine hair. Additionally, I always make sure to finish things off with Unite’s U:Oil - it’ll provide a beautiful, hydrated shine, and help to ensure your style lasts longer!

3. (Light) Teasing

Are we going for a beehive? No, no we are not. BUT a bit of light teasing really can help to add that lasting volume you’re looking for, especially on day 2 or 3 of your style.

To tease your hair, make sure to create a C-shaped downward motion with your comb. Never tease back and forth! By following that same C-shaped motion, you’ll be able to prevent damage to your hair.

Once it’s time to comb or brush your teased hair out, make sure to do so slowly and gently. Use a moisturizing product like an oil, start from the bottom of your hair, and work your way up!

4. Haircuts

A fresh cut with blunt ends will always create a thicker appearance to your hair!

Many fine-haired women attempt to keep as much length as possible, because they believe it gives them the appearance of having more hair. In reality, if you can go a bit shorter with a blunt cut, your hair will naturally look and feel like it has more volume and movement.

5. Extensions

Yes, it’s perfectly safe to wear salon-quality extensions with fine hair! Because of the delicacy of your hair texture I recommend having extensions installed that meet your natural hair length to add fullness.

You’d be amazed at what just one row of extensions can do to achieve that volume and bounce you’re looking for!

6. Root Sprays

A common concern voiced by those with fine hair is that they want to find a way to prevent seeing their scalp through their hair. If that’s the case, I highly recommend a good root spray to camouflage any thinning areas!

Root sprays work well for those with postpartum hair loss, thin or fine hair, or those who want to also cover their greys until their next salon visit!

7. Styling Tricks

If you’ve ever Youtubed “how to make fine hair look full” before, you’ve probably fallen down the styling rabbit hole! To be completely honest, there are so many little tricks that’ll help make your hair appear more full.

One of my favorites? When putting your hair up in a ponytail, section your hair off into two halves. Create two ponytails (one on top of the other) to help achieve the appearance of a fuller ponytail, and longer hair! It’s super simple and easy, as well as a fun way to “fake” that thicker ponytail we all know and love.

I hope those tips help you to achieve the hair confidence you deserve to feel - just remember that you (and your hair) are beautiful, no matter what.
